Frank Richard Clay, 72, of Stonington, passed away Thursday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
He was born in New London on February 16, 1939 the son of Frank L. and Mary (McGugan) Clay. He attended local schools and was a 1957 graduate of Stonington High School. After receiving his education, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Prior to his retirement in 1996, Mr. Clay was employed as a pipefitter supervisor at Electric Boat for 33 years. An active communicant of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, he enjoyed spending time with his family and bird watching. He loved travelling, visiting Portugal, Spain, the Canary Islands, Panama Canal and more recently travelled with friends through central Europe.
He married Shirley (Bradley) Clay at Christ Church, Westerly on August 5, 1961. Mrs. Clay died September 26, 1999.
Mr. Clay is survived by his children, Patricia Nance of Chesapeake, VA and David Clay of Stonington; his fiancee’, Sandy Bradshaw of Mystic; and two granddaughters, Kathryn and Andrea Nance.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 5-7pm. A Funeral Eucharist will be celebrated at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday at 11am. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
