Obituary

Diarmuid M. Higgins, 77, of Medway, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Christina E. “Tina” (Jeffers) Higgins for 49 years.

Born in Brookline on December 18, 1933, he was a son of the late George P. and Mary G. (Maloney) Higgins. Mr. Higgins was a resident of Medway for the past 64 years and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Milford in 1952.

As his first job, Mr. Higgins drove for Overland Mail and later went to work for the Medway Highway Department where he worked for 33 years, the last 26 years as highway superintendent, and retired in 1995.

Mr. Higgins also worked part-time as a Medway police and fire dispatcher and also served on the Medway Fire Department for 24 years.

Mr. Higgins was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Milford and the St. Joseph’s Men’s Club. He enjoyed working around his yard and time spent on his lawn tractor.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joanne Knowlton and her husband Bill of Medway and Jayne Porter and her husband Larry of Royalston and two grandsons, Zachary and Kevin Knowlton of Medway.

He is also survived by his godson John Maloney of Franklin, his nephew James Jeffers of Portland, CT, two nieces, Colleen Cole of Franklin and Robin Wood of Palm Harbor, FL and his “adopted” sister Joan E. DeCouto of Franklin.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral from the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St. in Medway on Tuesday, May 17 at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at St. Thomas Church, 111 Exchange St. in Millis at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Medway.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4 – 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 186 Highland Ave., Somerville, MA 02143.
