Obituary

WORCESTER___Schuyler B. Benedict, 95, of 55 Pocasset Ave., died Saturday Jan. 24 in University Commons Nursing Center. His wife of 65 years, Louise M. (Brown) Benedict died in 2001.

He leaves two sons, Robert I. Benedict of Northborough and Richard S. Benedict of Avon, Ct., six grandchildren; one great-grandson and nephews and nieces. A brother, Harry I. Benedict, Jr., died in 1960. He was born in Lockport, N.Y., son of Harry Irving and Lillian Chester (Blackley) Benedict and had lived here most of his life.

Mr. Benedict was a civil engineer 44 years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Dept. of Public Works and retired in 1974. In the early 1950’s he was chief of survey for the Lincoln Square reconstruction project. After retiring he was the town engineer 5 years for the Town of Northborough. He attended Northeastern University, Boston.

Mr. Benedict was a Massachusetts registered professional engineer and registered land surveyor. He was a member of the Massachusetts Land Surveyors Association, the Massachusetts Retired State & County workers Association, the New England Historic Genealogy Society and the Worcester Photography Clan. He enjoyed photography, gardening and genealogy. He published several books on the Benedict and Brown families and received a request from the Library of Congress for his work. Mr. Benedict survived the Worcester Tornado which destroyed his house.

Mr. Benedict donated his body to Tufts University Medical School, Boston. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Jan. 31, in HENRY-DIRSA FUNERAL HOME, 33 Ward St. A calling hour will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
