HERBERT W. SKELLETT ,90, of Quincy, formerly of Hingham,died at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth on May 10th, 2011. Mr. Skellett was a decorated World War II Navy Veteran and was engaged in the invasions of Casablanca, North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and Southern France. He was stationed off the shores of Japan when the U.S. dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the America Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal. Mr. Skellett was engaged in the sinking of the U-960 German Submarine bringing aboard 7 survivors including the captain, Gunther Heinrich. After the war Mr. Skellett was a real estate broker and professional barber retiring in 1984. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Husband of the late Mary Kate (Mannion) Skellett, he is survived by several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
A Graveside Service with military honors will be conducted on Monday, May 16th at 9 AM at the Mt. Wollaston Cemetery, 20 Sea St., Quincy.
