Obituary

CAREY, Harriet Stolmeier Born September 9, 1951, Honolulu, Hawaii. Died May 7, 2011, Wellesley, Massachusetts. Beloved wife of John Andrew Carey, devoted mother of Julia Scott Carey and Elizabeth Bordwell Carey, Harriet was the daughter and only child of the late Harry Anthony Stolmeier, a U. S. Navy aviator, and the late Louise Cowart Stolmeier, a registered nurse and wonderful pianist.

After attending Norfolk Academy in Virginia, Harriet matriculated at Radcliffe College, Harvard University, receiving her A. B. degree in chemistry in 1974. She went on to earn her M.D. in 1979 from New York University, and she completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Tufts New England Medical Center in 1982. Following a fellowship in emergency medicine at the University of Massachusetts, Worcester, Harriet worked on the life-flight helicopter rescue service at UMass, making more than 100 flights. She also worked as an attending physician in the emergency rooms at Mt. Auburn, Newton-Wellesley, Boston City (now part of Boston Medical Center), and Brigham and Women's Hospitals. Married to John in 1982, Harriet left the practice of medicine after the birth of their first daughter, Julia, in 1986. She gave birth to their second daughter, Elizabeth ("Lizzie"), in 1989. Dedicated to the care and education of her talented children, Harriet also helped over the years in a volunteer capacity at several organizations, including Hospice of the Good Shepherd, New England Conservatory, and St. Andrew's Church. Harriet was a highly sophisticated appreciator of the arts, including music and literature, and there were few scientific or medical questions on which she could not offer an informed and insightful opinion. A pianist herself, Harriet helped both of her daughters develop their musical aptitudes from the earliest of ages. Above all, her loved ones remember Harriet as a singularly nurturing and caring person. She died after an illness, of which she became aware only on March 1. Harriet leaves behind, in addition to her husband and daughters, her aunt Mary Ruth (Cowart) Smith, her sister-in-law Susan Marie (Carey) Harter, several cousins, a niece and a nephew, and many friends.
