Obituary

George “Red” Raposa, age 84, of Somerset passed away May 3, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Dorvalina “Dovie” (Tavares) Raposa and the son of the late Manuel & Maria (Furtado) Rapoza. Prior to retiring, George worked as a Machinist for E.G. & G. Sealol Co. of Warwick, RI, was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a parishioner of St. John of God Church, Somerset.

George was a charter member of the Somerset AMVETS Post # 72 in 1948, where he held the position of Commander for over 15 years. He served as Treasurer and former Commander for AMVETS District # 9, held the position of State Service Officer for AMVETS Department of Massachusetts for over 40 years and also served on the State Convention Corporation for over 30 years. George also did work with the AMVETS Blood Bank and the Brockton VA Hospital.

He was a member of the AMVETS National Executive Committee, AMVETS National V.A.V.S., the American Legion, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 12348 of Somerset & Assembly # 392 of Fall River, AARP Somerset Chapter, Somerset Village Seniors, Swansea Royal Travelers, the Holy Name Society, and a Somerset COA Board Member.

Besides his wife of Somerset, George was the father of Patricia Silvia (husband Michael) of Somerset, the grandfather of Pamela Silvia, and the uncle of many nieces & nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel, Adelino, Celestino “Sal”, William, and James Rapoza, Cizaltina “Sally” D’Adamo, and Mary Costa.

His funeral will take place from the MANUEL ROGERS & SONS FUNERAL HOME 1521 N. Main St. Fall River on FRIDAY at 8:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John of God Church at 9:00 A.M. Interment in St. Patrick Cemetery, Somerset. Calling hours THURSDAY 4-8 P.M. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to Beacon Hospice, 182 N. Main St. Fall River, MA 02720.
