Obituary

Alfred W. Dick, 89, of Derry, NH died Sunday January 25, 2004 at the Hanover Hill Healthcare Center, Manchester. He was born in Derry on July 3, 1914, a son of the late Benjamin J, and Cybil P. (Johnson) Dick and had been a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, Derry. He served as a Sergeant during WWII with the US Marines in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with a Marine Bombing Squadron #613. He was a Call Fireman for the town of Derry in 1942. He became a permanent Derry firefighter in 1951. He was appointed Lieutenant in 1955 and became Captain in 1960. He was employed as Fire Chief for the Town of Derry from 1969 - 1974, retiring in 1974. While serving as Fire Chief he established ambulance service in the town of Derry. In addition, he was the first to institute fire prevention, including building inspections, building exit plans and pre-fire surveys within the town. He was also a state fire instructor for Derry and surrounding towns. He was a Life member of the NH Association of Fire Chiefs. He was a member of the American Legion Lester Chase Post #9, Derry and the Legion of 1000 Men. He was an endowment member of the NRA and a past member of the Londonderry Fish and Game Club and the Chester Rod and Gun Club. He was a hunting, fishing, golf and bowling enthusiast and enjoyed travel.

He is survived by one son, Glenn W. Dick and his wife Cynthia of Manchester, two brothers, Albert Dick of Derry, Bernard Dick of Londonderry, one sister, Doris Nickerson of Derry, also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Cecile K. (Herbut) Dick in 1979.

Funeral services will be held Friday January 30th at 10:00am at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, East Derry. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 - 8 pm in the funeral home. Memorial contribution may be made to the Precious Blood Monastery, 700 Bridge Street Ext., Manchester, NH 03104.
