Austin J. Bettencourt, 80, of New Bedford died January 24, 2004 at Mariner Health for Southeastern Massachusetts after a long illness.
He was the husband of the late Helen M. (Kwiatkowski) Bettencourt,and son of the late Frederick and Mabel (Cawley) Bettencourt.
Mr. Bettencourt was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
Mr. Bettencourt was formerly employed by the City of New Bedford, with the Board of Health for many years and later as supervisor of Minimum Housing until his retirement.
Mr. Bettencout served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member Veterans of Foreign Wars Fort Phoenix Post 2892.
Survivors include his daughter, Marcia A. Bettencourt of Assonet, a brother, Frederick Bettencourt, Jr., of Vestal, New York; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Peter Bettencourt and brother of the late Joseph Bettencourt and James Bettencourt.
His Memorial Mass will be held on Friday at 10 AM in Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
