SGT. John Paul Castro, age 25 of Clarksville, died after being struck by small fire arms on Friday while serving in Afghanistan.
He was born in Andrews, TX, January 20, 1986, the son of David Castro, Sr. of Odessa, TX and Carmen Armendariz Castro of Andrews, TX.
SGT Castro is survived by his wife, Delia Butas Castro of Clarksville; one daughter, Natalia Marie Castro of Clarksville; one step-son, Kamren Shaw Buchholz of
Clarksville; one brother, David A. Castro, Jr. and one sister, Blanca E. Thakker, both of Irving, TX.
SGT John Paul Castro was an Infantryman assigned to Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the military in October of 2004, and arrived at Fort Campbell in January of 2006. He was the receiptant of numerous medals which include: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation w/combat, Army Commendation, Army Good Conduct,
National Defense Service, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/ Bronze Service Star, Iraq Campaign Medal w/ Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service, Army Service Ribbon, NATO and Army Meritorious Unit Commandation.
A Memorial service will 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2011 in Andrews, TX at the James Roberts Civic Center. A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Soldiers Chapel, Ft. Campbell, KY. Visitation will be 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2011 at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home and Tuesday 11:00 AM until the hour of the service at Soldiers Chapel. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2011 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-West, Hopkinsville, KY with Full Military Honors.
