Clarence L. Brooks, Sr., 98, of New Bedford died Monday April 25, 2011 at Forestview Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Kathleen Elna (Nelson) Brooks.
Born in Honduras, Central America, he was the son of the late Decey and Jane Brooks and one of nine siblings, all deceased. Clarence and Kathleen moved to New Bedford with their family in 1959.
Mr. Brooks was formerly employed as a stationary engineer in the Merchant Marines.
He was a member of Union Baptist Church, where he served as a Trustee.
He was a member of the Merchant Mariners Club.
Survivors include five children, Antoinette McDowell, Donald A. Johnson and his wife Karen, Errol C. Brooks and his wife Sylvia, Clarence L. Brooks Jr. and his wife Justa, and Kelvin L. Brooks and his wife Cheryl; his companion, Marilyn Rosa; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday May 3, 2011 at 10 AM at the Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday May 2, 2011 from 5-8 PM at the Union Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Union Baptist Church, 109 Court St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
