Obituary

Joaquim C. "Candido" Silva, 79, of New Bedford died Saturday April 23, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Aurea (Fonseca) Silva.

Born in Murtosa, Portugal, the son of the late Maria Rosalia (doPinho) and Joaquim Manuel daSilva, he lived in New Bedford for the past 41 years.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Mr. Silva was a part-owner and captain of F/V Sao Pedro until his retirement.

He was a member of the New Bedford Fishermen's Club.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Aurea Costeira and her husband Arlindo and Maria doCarmo Sousa and her husband Mario, all of New Bedford; five grandchildren, Jessica, Mario Jr., Mary-Jo, Kimberley, and Melissa; and five great-grandchildren, Skyla, Mya, Mason, Zoe, and Rosalina.


He was the brother of the late Joaquim, Manuel, Gaspar, Henrique, Maria doCarmo, and Albertina.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9 AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
