Betty (Hanson) Surgens, age 88, of Brockton died Friday, April 8, 2011, at home after a long battle with lung cancer. She was the loving wife of Donald E. Surgens for 64 years. Born April 3, 1923, of the late Ludwig and Helga (Pearson) Hanson, Betty was raised in Weymouth (Wessagusset) and moved to Bridgewater, where her family established Hanson's dairy and vegetable farm. She was a graduate of Bridgewater Academy High School, Class of 1935. In 1945, she met Donald while he was waiting to be discharged from the Army after World War II. They married in 1946 and settled in West Bridgewater, where they lived for 52 years before moving to Brockton five years ago. Betty worked for a brokerage firm in Boston, for the George Knight family of Brockton, the Lutheran Nursing Home and Old Colony Home Health Services of Brockton and for the Bridgewater Visiting Nurses Association. In retirement, she enjoyed spending summers with her husband at their vacation home in Solon, Maine. Her hobbies included rug braiding, furniture upholstery, canning and sewing. She lived her life by her love and devotion to reading and studying the Bible. She was a faithful member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and a member of its women's Martha Guild. She loved the Lord and took her battle with cancer in stride anticipating her eternal home in Heaven. She was the devoted mother of Marcia Johnson of St.Petersburg, Fla., Barbara Ekman of Orange, Conn., and Beth Miltner of West Bridgewater. She leaves four grandchildren, Eric and Carl Ekman, Alexander and Emily Miltner; two great-grandchildren, Adlien and Evangeline Ekman; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of Eric, Herbert, John and Roger Hanson and Marjorie Sullivan. A memorial service celebrating her life and heavenly rest will be held at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 900 Main St., Brockton, April 30, at 11 O'clock in the morning.
