William J. Cavanaugh age 86 of Salem, NH, died Sunday at Heywood Hospital, Gardner, MA.
He was born in Lawrence, MA, where he grew up and attended schools. He was a long time resident of Salem, NH.
Mr. Cavanaugh worked for the Salem, NH Water Dept. He was in the United States Navy for 27 years, being aboard numerous submarines, including the WWII Submarine SSN Queenfish. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the VFW, & the Subvets in Portsmouth, NH. He enjoyed cards, 45’s, cribbage, & board games. He was a wonderful friend and enjoyed helping others, and he especially loved his grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents: William J. & Margaret (Threlfall) Cavanaugh. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Marion, Jack, & Hank Cavanaugh
He is survived by his wife of 61 years: Joyce (Carter) Cavanaugh of Salem, NH
Son: William J. Cavanaugh IV of Manchester, NH
3 Grandchildren: Margaret, Elizabeth, & Mary Kate Cavanaugh

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, April 26 at 10:30 AM at Mary Queen of Peace Church, Salem, NH. Burial will be in the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH
Calling hours will be held Monday, April 25th form 4-7 PM at the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St, Salem, NH.
