Obituary

Mrs. Joan F. (Conroy) Doherty, formerly of Cedar Street, Taunton, died Sunday, April 17 in Marian Manor following a lengthy period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert E. Doherty for 61 years. She was born 87 years ago in Taunton, the daughter of the late Dr. James and Mary C. (Ryan) Conroy. She was educated in Taunton, having graduated from St. Mary’s Grammar School and from Taunton High School in 1942, and was also a 1946 graduate of Smith College in Northampton. She had been employed as a teacher at the Brick House School in Taunton for 15 years. She enjoyed antiques. A communicant of St. Mary’s Church, she was a dependable and talented participant in parish activities, especially the choir. Mrs. Doherty was also a volunteer for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. In addition, she actively supported The Pine Street Inn and Rosie’s Place in Boston and Covenant House in Manhattan.
She leaves 3 sons: Dr. Mark Doherty of Lakeville, Robert E. Doherty, Jr. of Chester, Ct., and Christopher Doherty of Bethesda, Md.; 1 daughter: Katherine Doherty of Wilmington, Ma.; 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Dr. James Conroy, William Conroy and Robert M. Conroy.
Funeral services will be held from The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home, 467 Bay Street on Wednesday, April 20 at 10:00 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Church at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Visiting Hour will precede the funeral, Wednesday, from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M.
