Obituary

NEW BEDFORD — Jean Campbell, of Fairhaven, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Alden Court after a period of declining health.

Born in Fairhaven, she was the daughter of the late Elwin Gilbert and Marion Hicks (Dexter) Campbell and lived much of her life in this community. A 1942 graduate of Fairhaven High School, she continued her educational pursuits at Lasell Junior College Class of 1944, Brown University Class of 1946, the University of Hartford Class of 1963.

An active member of the First Congregational Church in Fairhaven, she was a member of the finance committee and served on the Board of Deacons. Jean served on the Board of Corporators of Lasell College, the Fairhaven Improvement Association, President of Millicent Library Trustees, Ladies Branch of the N.B. Port Society, the Interchurch Council of Greater New Bedford and its Pastoral Counseling and Care Center, Executive Director of the Plymouth, Mass. and Manchester, Conn. Girl Scout Organizations, Executive Director of the N.B. YWCA, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Women Educators, N.B. Legal Aide Society, Brown University Alumnae Club and N.B. Regional VII Health Planning Group. In 1987 she was one of nine women honored by the N.B. Branch of American Association of University Women during Women's History Week.

Jean was an individual who made outstanding contributions to her community and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews.

Her private funeral arrangements are with the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford.

It is suggested remembrances be made in her name to the First Congregational Church, 34 Center St., Fairhaven 02719 or the Millicent Library, 45 Center St., Fairhaven, MA 02719.
