Mary Kathryn Stone, 87, of Pilot Mountain passed away Monday evening at Forsyth Medical Center after sustaining a massive brain hemorrhage on Sunday while attending Sunday school at her beloved 1st Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain where she was a life long member. She was especially proud of the new addition of the church which, with its handicap accessibility, allowed her to remain active as a member of the adult choir and kitchen committee. She also had served many years as WMU Director. She was the youngest of the "Five Golden Girls" of Dock Riley and Cordella Samuel Fulk. Other interests included being a Charter Member of Pilot Knob Park where she played golf as long as health permitted and Pilot Mountain Chapter 23 Order of the Eastern Star for over 60 yrs. where she served as Worthy Matron, Secretary, and District Deputy Grand Matron as well as various appointed positions of the Grand Chapter of North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Paul W. Shelton, Sr., and Warren J. Stone,
sisters, Margaret F. Denny, Anne F. Thomas, and Elizabeth (Boo) Lawson. Survivors include her son Paul W. Shelton, Jr. and wife, Jane of King, N. C., sister, Frances F. Sawyer of Greensboro, N. C., stepdaughter, Rachel Ann Joyce and husband Richard of Charlotte, N. C., as well as stepgranddaughters Robin and Regina, of Charlotte, stepgrandson, David C. Payne and wife Laura Of Winston-Salem, N. C. She was "Momma K" to them and their children, Hannah, Rachel, and Clay. She is also survived by an adoptive granddaughter, Jennifer Robinson and adoptive great grandchildren, Sarah and Joseph, and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to her wonderful caregivers, Jennifer, Sandra, Linda and Gloria who allowed her to remain in her home during this past year. Visitation will be at 1st Baptist Church Wednesday evening, April 13, between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. The funeral will be at lst Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain Thursday, April 14, at 2:00 p.m. and will be officiated by her pastor, Gene Sherrill. Burial will follow at Pilot Mountain City Cemetery with OES Burial Rites conducted by Pilot OES Chapter 23. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund of 1st Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain, P.O. Box 818, Pilot Mountain, N.C. 27041.
