Obituary

Amonte, Salvatore L. "Sam", a lifelong resident of Hingham, passed away April 10, 2011 at the age of 87.

Beloved husband of the late Phyllis (Fanizzi) Amonte. Loving father of Diane St. Laurent and her husband Larry of Hingham, Annette Barrett and her husband Stephen of VT and Rose Yodzio and her husband Lance of Hingham. Devoted grandfather of Louis, Richard, Eric, Paul, Ben, and Samantha. Great grandfather of Jake, Henry, Kaitlyn, Allison, Anna, and Stella. Brother of Louise Logsdon of IN, and the late Lena Kristnofe, Nellie Santavicca, Rocco Amonte, Joseph Amonte, Viola Achille, Frank Amonte, Pasquale Amonte, and Grace "Dolly" O'Donnell.

Sam proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Princeton. The Princeton was bombed in 1944 killing 108 men on board. After 8 hours in the water, Sam and many of his crew mates were rescued. After the war, Sam worked as a police officer for the town of Hingham. His friendly spirit and easy going demeanor were a perfect fit for the job. To this day, he is fondly remembered for his days in uniform serving in Hingham Square. After retirement, Sam began his “second career” for Pyne Keohane Funeral Home in Hingham. He comforted countless grieving families with his natural warmth and charm. A past president of the Hingham Son’s of Italy, Sam enjoyed many social occasions with friends at the club. He was also a member of Hingham American Legion Post 120 and a member of the Hingham Police Association. His vegetable garden was legendary and his tomatoes were second to none. Most of all, Sam devoted his life to his family. He will be greatly missed by all those who were lucky to have known him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Saturday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10 AM.
