Martin J. “Dudley” “Buddy” Clougherty, 81, of Whitman, formerly of South Boston and Dorchester, passed away on Saturday April 9th at the Hebrew Rehabilitation for the Aged in Roslindale, after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Joan (Clifford) Clougherty.
Martin was born in South Boston, son of the late Dudley and Maryann (Clougherty) Cloherty.
He has been a resident of Whitman for 6 years and a communicant of the Holy Ghost Church.
Martin was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country from 1947-1948.
He worked for the City of Boston in the election department, as a voting machine custodian, before retiring after 25 years of service.
Martin enjoyed sports, reading and doing crossword puzzles.
In addition to his wife of 59 years Joan, he is survived by his children, Joyce Loughrey and her husband John of Quincy, Martin Clougherty, Jr. and his wife Kathy of Rockland, Eileen O’Grady and her husband Stephen of West Roxbury, JoAnn O’Keefe and her husband Michael of Halifax, the late Kathleen Clougherty , John Clougherty and his wife Jane of Marshfield, , Maryann Austin and her husband Fred of Bridgewater, his brother Edward Clougherty of South Boston ; also 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late, P. Joseph, John, Michael, Margaret, Mary and Catherine.
His funeral services will be held on Wednesday April 13th at 8:15AM from Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury. Visitation will be on Tuesday April 12th from 4:00-8:00PM. Donations may be made in his name to the Holy Ghost Church, 518 Washington St. Whitman, MA 02382
