Obituary

SALEM- Muriel (Greaves) Collins, 76, of Salem, died Tuesday morning, January 20, 2004 in the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home, Salem, following a brief illness.

Muriel was a descendent of a family that has resided in Salem since the late 1700's. She was the daughter of the late Lyric and Beatrice (Hayes) Greaves and was a lifelong resident of the city.

Muriel was a graduate of Salem High School in 1948. She attended what was then known as the Salem Teachers College and later, the Georgetown University School of Practical Nursing. She was a member of the St Peter’s Church in Salem, where she was president of the Episcopal Church Women, director of the Altar Guild, and taught Sunday school for many years.

Mrs. Collins was a past president of the Greater Salem Business and Professional Women, and a member of the Toastmasters Club “Harbourside” District 31 club 5163. She was also a member of the Salem Council on Aging, The Women’s Friend Society, the AARP, and was a long time volunteer at the Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital.

Prior to her retirement in the mid 1980's, she was employed for 25 years by New England Telephone & Telegraph Co./Nynex, in Salem and later in Boston, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

She is survived by three sons, Eugene L. Collins, John E. Collins and Charles N. Collins, all of Salem, three grandchildren, Tila (Collins) Roberts of Indianapolis, Indiana, Eugene L. Collins, III of Haverhill, Vanessa Collins of Salem, two great grandchildren, Tony Collins of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jaylen Collins of Haverhill, four step-grandchildren, Martin Collins, Andrew Collins, Christopher Collins and Lorraine Collins, three brothers, Gordon Lyric Greaves, Richard Oliver Greaves and Merrill Bennett Greaves, all of Salem and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, Ralph Charles Greaves.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2002 at 10 am at the St Peter’s Episcopal Church, Salem. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours are Friday, 4 to 8 pm at the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Burial is in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
