Brownell, Richard J. 82, of Needham and Harborside ME, January 19, 2004. Beloved wife of the late Mildred L. Brownell. Mother of Barbara D. Brownell of Needham and Richard J. Brownell and his wife Lindy and grandfather of Tim, Julia, and Pete, all of Ridgewood NJ. Brother of Irving C. Brownell of Deerfield Beach FL. A graduate of Brookline High School, the Maine Maritime Academy, and BU, he served his country in the USN during WW II. He was a banker for 43 years with BayBank, an avid sailor, a genealogist and very community service minded. He was a longtime Town Meeting Member, recipient of the Richard P. Melick award, and served on innumerable boards and committees, including the Needham-Newton Chamber of Commerce, Needham Finance Committee, American Red Cross, the Visiting Nurse Assoc. and Mrs. Twiddle’s Dance Group - Society for the Terpsichorean Arts. He was a past president of the Needham Rotary Club, Needham Community Council and the Society in Dedham for the Apprehension of Horse Thieves. Most recently, he was an archivist for the Brooksville, ME Historical Society, Grand Marshall and Emcee of the Harborside, ME 4th of July parade, member of The Sailing and Debating Society, Harborside Chapter Of Grumpy Old Men, Needham Retired Men’s Club and Investment Group and the Masonic Lodge. A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 24th at 11:00 Am at the Carter Memorial United Methodist Church, 800 Highland Ave., Needham MA. In lieu of flowers memorials in Dick’s memory may be made the Permanent Memorial Fund at the Carter Memorial United Methodist Church 800 Highland Avenue, Needham MA 02494 or to the Needham Community Council, 51 Lincoln St., Needham MA 02492.
