Obituary

Alfred William “Sam” Mahony age 83 of E. Peoria, Illinois passed away March 25, 2011 due to natural causes. He was born Sept. 9, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to John and Lydia (Hynes) Mahony.
Al enlisted and served in the Navy during World War II. Upon his discharge he attended and graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Journalism. After working in sales for Collier encyclopedia he spent many years pursuing various journalist endeavors until settling on the weekly production of Nearby Night Life Magazine.
He was proud of his military service and was actively involved with the local Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, where he would search for surviving members and publish their stories. He was also a photographer for many Veteran Associations. Al was one of the contributors to America’s Youngest Warriors a Book about underage veterans of WWII as he had enlisted at the age of 16.
Through his work on Nearby Nightlife he became well known to many Peoria establishments, patrons and entertainment professionals. He will be dearly missed by all.
He is survived by his children Tom, Peggy, Pat, Dan, Kathy, and Gail Mahony; Jane Velez and 15 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11:00am Tuesday April 5, 2011 at Mason Funeral Home Germantown Hills Chapel with Rev. Gary Salm officiating. Cremation Rites will be accorded with burial of ashes in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Memorials can be made to Disabled American Veterans.
