Dempsey, Janet D., a long time resident of Roslindale, died on March 26, 2011 in her Mansfield home surrounded by family.
She was born on July 3,1923 in Easton, PA to the late Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Donnelly as one of thirteen children. In World War II she served as a radio operator in the U.S. Navy, RM Second Class, Women’s Reserve. In the service she was stationed at Quonset Point, RI and met her husband, the late Frederick T. Dempsey A.R.M. 2nd Class of Dorchester.
Always a hard worker, after her children were born she joined the work force and continued to work until she was 85, finishing at Minski, Gould, & Costellic.
She is survived by her 4 boys and their spouses, Frederick Jr. and Jane Dempsey, Michael and Judy Dempsey, William (Bill) and Eileen Dempsey, John (Jack) and Maryann Dempsey.
Those who knew Jan remember her fondly for her honest spirit and sharp wit. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family, especially her famous cinnamon buns and chocolate chip cookies. Jan was an avid sports fan, especially tennis and the hometown Red Sox.
She will be remembered for her unfailing compassion for others in need. Her time spent at the bedside of ailing friends and family is a testament to her giving and unselfish nature. She was always willing to do what she could while asking for nothing in return.
She is survived by 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She spent her final years living with family. Nana loved reading to the little ones; her loving spirit will be missed by all.
