Hilda G. (Sylvia) Monteiro, 89, of New Bedford died March 25, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the former wife of the late Edward Monteiro and John Pacheco.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Antone "Baby Doll" and Mary (Gilbert) Sylvia, she lived in New Bedford most of her life.
Mrs. Monteiro was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
She was formerly employed by several local fish houses for many years before retiring from Salt Sea Fishing House.
Mrs. Monteiro enjoyed her annual trip to Baltimore to visit her son, playing Bingo and being the matriarch of her large family. She also valued her collection of elephants.
Survivors include 4 sons, Edward Monteiro of Glen Burnie, MD, John Wayne Monteiro and his wife Bonnie and Paul Monteiro and his wife Peggy, all of New Bedford, Anthony Charles Monteiro and his wife Sherry of Dighton; a daughter, Shirley Tavares and her companion James Hero of New Bedford; 3 brothers, Antone Cabral of California, Franklin Cabral of Florida and Valentino Cabral and his wife Elizabeth of New Bedford; her sister-in-law, Mentha Silva of Dallas, TX; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the mother-in-law of the late Babs Monteiro and the sister of the late Benvinda Campbell and Charles Sylvia.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 31st at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours Wednesday, March 30th from 4-8 PM.
