TEWKSBURY - H. Elizabeth "Betty" Burns, age 87, an active member of Tewksbury senior community, died Thursday morning, March 24, at Saints Medical Center in Lowell, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Robert W. "Burnzy" Burns, who died in 1981.
She was born in Spring Hill, Nova Scotia, June 30, 1923, a daughter of the late John and Marie (Richard) Martin. Her family emigrated to the US when she was three, and settled in the Malden area. Upon her marriage to her late husband in 1950, they moved to Stoneham, and then to Tewksbury in 1955.
She had been a communicant of St. William's since 1955.
In her later years, she became a volunteer and active member at Tewksbury Senior Center. She worked numerous fund-raising events with the seniors during the most recent building expansion project. She was a member of the Golden Age Club, and a former member of the "Red Hatters."
She is survived by three children, Maureen and her husband Dennis Gearin of Chelmsford, Janine and her husband Michael Smith of Lunenburg, and Robert W. Burns Jr. and his wife Karen (Landry) of Londonderry, NH; four grandchildren, Michael Gearin of CA, Matthew Gearin of Shirley, Jamie Burns of OH, Kevin Burns of Londonderry, NH; one great granddaughter, Madison; a sister, Catherine "Kay" Irving of Littleton, MA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also sister of the late Charles Martin and Terry Glancy.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, Mar. 29, in St. William's Church, Tewksbury. Burial followed at Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Friends of the Elderly, c/o Tewksbury Sr. Ctr., 175 Chandler St., Tewksbury, MA 01876, will be appreciated.
