Obituary

Dennis "Lefty" Correia, 80, of New Bedford died Monday February 4, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Alice (Costa)Correia, and son of the late Mariano and Mary (Macedo) Correia.

Mr. Correia was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for all of his life.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Mr. Correia was formerly employed as a tire builder for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company until his retirement.

Mr. Correia served in the U.S. Army with the 387th Coast Artillery Battalion during World War II, and participated in the battles and campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the American Theater Campaign ribbon, the World War II Victory medal and the Good Conduct medal. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Whaling City Post 3196 and a member of the Portuguese-American Social Club and the Washington Club. Many years ago, he was a pitcher for the Carmelite League. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice M. Eccleston of New Bedford; a sister, Theresa Ferreira of Somers, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Bernice Correia of New Bedford; 2 granddaughters, Sherri Antao, and her husband Rui, of New Bedford and Lisa Eccleston of Orlando, FL; 4 great-grandchildren, Kevin Antao, Kristina Antao, Bethany Antao and Nathan Antao; and several nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Mariano Correia, Antone Correia, Mary Correia, and Clara Lewis, and father-in-law of the late George W. Eccleston, III.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordMonday February 11, 2002 at 8 AM.Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday Februar 10, 2002 from 4-8 PM. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
