Marion (Antonicelli) Gavigan age 99 of Provincetown formerly of Mastic, NY, died March 18, 2011 at Seashore Point in Provincetown. She is the mother of Catherine (Gavigan) Cook and her husband Chester Cook of Provincetown and Marie Gavigan of Mastic, NY. She was the daughter of the late Donato and Angela (Fortunato) Antonicelli. She was born in Bari, Italy on April 20, 1911 and her family moved to the United States and settled in Schenectady, NY in 1913. In the late 1920s she lived in Manhattan where she met her husband the late William Gavigan who died in 1986. He was an organist and church choir director and she sang in the choir. They were married in 1941 and moved to Woodhaven, NY where they lived from 1941 until 1980. In 1980 they moved to Mastic, NY. Around 1996 she began visiting her daughter and grandchildren regularly, living here on a part time basis. She moved full time to Provincetown around 2005. Mrs. Gavigan loved music and singing. One of her favorite hobbies was gardening and tending to her flowers. She loved sewing and making her own clothes. She even made her own wedding dress.
Besides her 2 daughters, she is survived by her two grandchildren; Chester Cook of Westbrook, ME and Cynthia Cook Travers of Provincetown, 4 great grandchildren, her 2 nephews; Phillip Antonicelli of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Peter Antonicelli of Williston, Park, NY, and her niece Arlene Antonicelli of Kensington, MD. She was also the sister of the late Phillip Antonicelli.
A funeral will be held from the Gately – McHoul Funeral Home on Saturday March 25, 2011 at 9:15am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St. Provincetown at 10:00am. Funeral home visiting hours are Friday from 4:00 – 7:00pm. If desired memorial contributions in her honor may be made to St. Peter the Apostle Church 11 Prince St. Provincetown, MA 02657. The family of Mrs. Gavigan would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Seashore Point for the professional and compassionate care their mother received.
