Obituary

WEBSTER - Anthony E. Szymczak, 95, of Ash Street, died Saturday, March 19, 2011, in Webster Manor after an illness.

He leaves his wife of almost 70 years, Helen B. (Janakowski) Szymczak; 2 sons, Charles A. “Chuck” Szymczak and his wife Jo-Ann of Dudley, and John E. Szymczak of Webster; 2 grandchildren, Scott and Michael Szymczak; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his 3 brothers, Joseph, John and Edward Szymczak, and by his 4 sisters, Victoria Szymczak, Bernice Szymczak, Helen Maciejewski and Mae Stevens.

He was born in Webster, a son of William and Mary (Nowak) Szymczak and was a lifelong resident.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Rhineland. He was prisoner of war and was awarded a bronze service star. He belonged to the ex-POW group of Worcester and Texas.

Mr. Szymczak first was a spinner at Maanexit Spinning Company. He then was a blocker at the American Optical Company in Southbridge for 35 years before he retired in 1977.

He was a member of Saint Joseph Basilica.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, March 22, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in saint Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb Street.. Burial will be in Saint Joseph Garden of Peace. The Webster-Dudley Veterans Council will perform the military honors at the cemetery. A calling period will be from 8:15 to 9:15AM Tuesday, March 22, in the funeral home. Donations in his name may be made to either the Friends of Saint Joseph School.
