BEVERLY: Nancy C. (O’Rourke) Galvin, 82, died Saturday, March 19, 2011 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late John J. Galvin who died in 1983. They shared thirty-three years of marriage.
Born in Peabody on September 24, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Michael J. and Marie L. (Comeau) O’Rourke. She attended Peabody, Salem and Boston public schools and was a graduate of Jamaica Plain High School class of 1946. She had resided in Beverly since 1958.
Nancy was employed for thirty years at the former Jordan Marsh Co. in Peabody, serving as a supervisor in their telephone, mail orders and shipping records office. She had also once worked for the New England Telephone Company and the Harvard Medical School.
She was a member and past-president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #327 of Boston, a member of the American Legion Unit #61 of Revere, the Beverly Senior Center and the Beverly Historical Society. She was an accomplished portrait and landscape artist and enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and playing scrabble. She also enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James M. and Janice M. (Mills) Galvin of Beverly; four grandchildren, Holly, Jack, Thomas and Kevin Galvin all of Beverly; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Guy Praria of Wayland and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a sister, Marie Wood and a brother, Philip O’Rourke.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923. Interment will be held in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
