Elfriede Berta Hoppe, 96, of Chester, NH died January 14, 2004 at her home following a courageous battle with stomach cancer. Oma, as she was known, was born in the village of Walder, Solingen, Germany on October 15, 1907. She was the daughter of the late Carl and Adele (Lagensieben) Pohl. Oma had been a longtime resident of Union, NJ before moving to Chester in June of 2003. Oma had immigrated to the United States on New Years Eve 1930. She worked a large part of her life as a jewelry assembler for Forstner’s in Irvington, NJ. Oma was currently attending the Eaglebrook Christian Church in Raymond, and was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Union, NJ.
She is survived by one granddaughter, Debbie Mahoney and her husband William of Chester, one grandson, Arthur Lyons of Jackson, NJ, four great grandchildren, one niece and one nephew, both of Germany. She was the widow of the late Richard Hoppe. Oma out lived her only daughter, Waltrude Lyons who died in 1991.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Saturday January 17th at 10:00am in the Eaglebrook Christian Church, 90 Chester Rd., Route 102, Raymond. A second memorial service will be held on Saturday January 24th at 11:00am at the First Baptist Church, Union, NJ. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Home Health and Hospice Services, 1850 Elm Street, Manchester, NH 03104 or to the Easter Seals Adult Daycare Program, 555 Auburn Street, Manchester, NH 03103. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry is handling the arrangements.
