Michael P. Smith, 74, of Fairhaven, died Thursday, March 17, 2011 at home after a long battle with pulmonary arterial hypertension. He was the husband of Janice L. (Marotte) Smith.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Ambrose and Nora (Sparrow) Smith, he lived in Fairhaven for most of his life.
Mr. Smith was formerly employed as a commercial fisherman out of the Port of New Bedford.
He was a member of the New Bedford Fishermen's Union and a former member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
Survivors include his wife; two children, Michael P. Smith and his fiancée Cheryl Perry and Joyce A. Horn and her husband Russell, all of Fairhaven; a brother, Rev. Msgr. John J. Smith of Fall River; two sisters, Sr. Mary Nora Smith, R.S.M., and Patricia E. Manning, both of New Bedford; three grandchildren, Matthew Dubois, Shannon Horn, and Paige Horn; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late James J. Smith, Robert Smith, Ambrose V. Smith, Philip Smith, Nora Feener, and Julia Gamba.
His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday March 25, 2011 at 10 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours are omitted.
