Obituary

NEW BEDFORD — Luis Angel Mejias II, age 54, died at St. Luke's Hospital on 3-15-2011, after a long illness surrounded by his family.

Born and raised in New York City, he lived in the New Bedford area for most of his life. He was the son of Julia (Collazo) Calderon, step-son of Rafael Calderon Sr., of the Dominican Republic & son of the late Luis Angel Mejias I. Husband of Gladys Mejias of New Bedford; beloved father of Luis Angel Mejias III & Michael Mejias of New Bedford; grandfather of Jonathan Mejias of Randolph; step-grandfather to Tifinie Hay, Briana Hay and Skyla Pettey of Fall River.

He served 4 years in the United States Navy and worked for a period of time as a Correctional Officer in MCI-Cedar Junction. He was a volunteer for a Treatment on Demand, and a member of the Teen Challenge Program in Brockton. Mr. Mejias enjoyed spending quality time with his sons and grandchildren, as well as watching baseball games as he was a devoted Yankees Fan.

Survivors include his brother, Rafael Calderon Jr., of Miami, Florida; his sister, Milagros Calderon of Dominican Republic; his long-time companion of 16 years, Theresa Montiero & her daughter's, Megan & Nicole; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the first grandchild of many born into a family of 5 generations to the late Julio & Cruz Collazo. He was a communicant of many Christian churches to include the Christian Fellowship Center.

Visitation will take place at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County Street at the corner of Elm St., NB Thursday from 5-8 P.M. His service will be at 9 A.M. Friday at the funeral home followed by burial in Rural Cemetery Veterans Section
