Obituary

Robert A. "Bud" Mechan, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at his home in Charlestown following an extended illness. He was 84 years old.

Bud was born in Boston on September 24, 1926 to the late Elmer E. and Margaret (Kane) Mechan. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Mechanics Arts School in Boston in 1944. Bud enlisted into the United States Navy on October 25, 1944 and served his country proudly and honorably during World War II. He was discharged on July 17, 1946 with the rank of Seaman, First Class. Bud enjoyed summering in Orleans on Cape Cod with his family in earlier days. He was a proud 53 year member of the Boston Plumbers Union Local # 12 and worked as a plumber on several major construction projects in the City of Boston. Bud was a member of the "Falcons" and was a member of the "Washies" champion football team. He was an original member of the fathers who began the Milt Schmidt Hockey Program in Charlestown back in the 1960's and 1970's. He was also involved in coaching Charlestown Youth Hockey and Charlestown Little League teams. He was also a member of The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association and enjoyed listening to music.

Bud is the beloved husband of 58 years to Mary A. (Downes) Mechan. He is the devoted father of Ellen M. Ander of Randolph, Robert A. Mechan Jr. of New York, Brian J. Mechan of Charlestown and Patricia A. Mechan of Charlestown. He is the loving Par to Christopher and Gregory Ander both of Randolph and Erin and Ryan Mechan both of New York. He is the beloved brother of Elmer E. Mechan of Weymouth and the late Kenneth Mechan and Janet Palma. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and wonderful friends and neighbors.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bud's Funeral on Thursday, March 17, 2011 "St. Patrick's Day" at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10 a.m. Interment at Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:00 p.m. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m.
