Obituary

In Wrentham, March 9, 2011 Richard “Paul” Mulhern passed away peacefully at the Maples Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wrentham, MA., at the age of 90. Mr. Mulhern was a lifelong resident of Taunton and was the sole proprietor of Mulhern’s Pharmacy for over 45 years until his retirement in 1994. The business was originally established by his father in 1904 and was one of the last remaining independent pharmacies in the city of Taunton at the time of his retirement. He was the son of the late John F. and Josephine (Nichols) Mulhern of Taunton. He was also the youngest surviving brother of the late Dr. John F. Mulhern Jr., Daniel T. Mulhern, and Josephine A. (Mulhern) Coyle. Mr. Mulhern was a graduate of Bishop Coyle High School and Mass College of Pharmacy, where he completed his studies as part of the GI Bill after serving in the Army Medical Corps in WWII. During his service in the war, Mr. Mulhern was active in the Normandy, Northern France, and German theatre campaigns. In addition to taking over and managing the family business, Mr. Mulhern was an active member of the Taunton community and was involved in many civic causes and charitable endeavors. He was also an avid golfer, swimmer, and sailor. Mr. Mulhern’s love of the ocean was well known among his friends and family as he was also a summer resident of New Silver Beach in North Falmouth. Mr Mulhern is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothea E. (Stanton) Mulhern as well as his son David S. and and daughter-in-law Ellen A. of Wrentham. He is also the beloved grandfather of Kelly Catherine and Paige Elizabeth Mulhern of Wrentham. Mr. Mulhern is also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews. Funeral from the O’Keefe-wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington St., Taunton, MA 02780 on Monday, March 14th at 10am. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Taunton at 11am. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Sunday from 3-6pm. Burial will be in the family lot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Taunton.
