Edward W. “Mr. Ed” Bendell age 82, of Brockton died Tuesday March 8, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center. He was the loving husband for 48 years of the late Ruby F. (Odin) Bendell. Ed was born in Brockton a son of the late Herbert Bendell and Mercy (Cahoon)(Bendell) Bates and lived in the city for most of his life. Ed’s love of horses led him to enlist in the US Army after WWII to serve in the cavalry. He retired as a custodian in the Brockton School System working at the old Arnone School and Brockton High School where he also unloaded the school department lunch trucks.
Ed was a founding and longtime member of the Honorable Breakfast Club at the Mallard Café in Brockton and was also a member of the Polish White Eagles Club. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, making miniature ships and building a dollhouse with miniature furniture for his granddaughters. He also enjoyed flying remote airplanes. He will be fondly remembered as playing Santa Claus at his club’s annual Christmas parties. Ed cherished the time he could spend with children especially his grandchildren.
Ed was the father of Kimberly A. Bailey and her husband Scott of E. Taunton and the late Victoria L. Moore. He leaves his grandchildren Marissa and Katelyn Bailey, Dale Pina, Christine Rodrigues and Laura Heersink. He was the brother of Robert Bendell of Brockton; Mildred Blackmar of Rhode Island; Elsie Finch of W. Bridgewater and the late Eleanor Olson, Doris Chuckran, John Bendell, Marion Young and Edna Colligan. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton Friday 4-7 pm. A service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Saturday at 10:30 am.
