Harry J. Pappas, 78, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
He is survived by his sons; Geoffrey of San Diego, CA., and Gregory and his wife Maureen of Vienna, VA.; two grandsons; Demetri and Geoffrey, Jr., two brothers, Emmanuel of Webster and Daniel of Stoneham. He was predeceased by brothers, Arthur, Achilles, Nicholas, George, Hercules, Ernest and Constatine.
Harry was born in Webster, son of James and Olympia (Demetri) Pappas.
He attended Bartlett High School and graduated from Wilbraham Academy. He graduated from Nichols Jr. College in Dudley, Appalacian State College in North Carolina and played varsity basketball at both schools.
Harry served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
He was athletic director, taught math and coached many outstanding basketball teams at Brandywine Jr. College in Wilmington, Deleware. He coached at Nichols College and professional basketball in Germany and Greece, winning the Greek national championship.
Harry enjoyed horse racing and worked at Pompano Downs Race Track in Ft. Lauderdale before retiring.
Calling Hours for Harry will be Friday, March 11, 2011 from 6 to 8 PM at the Robert J. Miller Funeral Home and Lake Chapel, 366 School St., in Webster. A Trisagion Service will be at 6 PM
in the funeral home.
The Funeral will be Saturday, March 12, 2011 with a Service at 11 AM at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 35 Lake Parkway. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Webster-Dudley Veterans Council.
