On March 5, 2011 EUGENE “GENE” EDWARD LEIMKUHLER, age 96, passed away peacefully after fighting age-related complications for three and a half weeks in the Care Center at Oak Crest Village Retirement Community where he had lived for the past 14 years. For the previous half century, he had resided in the Annapolis area. After working in the insurance business, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1941 and served four years in the Pacific Theater and was in the first wave of the invasion of the island of Guam during World War II. After being discharged, he went to work for Math. F. Leimkuhler Stationers in Baltimore which had been started by his father in 1897. The firm which produced Printing and sold Office Supplies grew and was eventually named Leimkuhler Office Products. He became President in 1962 and Chairman of the Board in 1982 when his son, John succeeded him as President. The company was sold to a larger Virginia firm in 1996. He was a lifelong avid outdoorsman particularly enjoying sailing, hunting and fishing. He started golfing in his 50’s and played until he broke his hip at age 92. He was also a gourmet cook and connoisseur of special restaurants where he was well known by their owners and staffs. Born May 27, 1914 in Baltimore, MD he was the son of the late Mathais “Matty” F. and Mabel A. Leimkuhler (Nee Peake) of Baltimore and the brother of the late Mary M. Sullivan of Bel Air. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 12 1/2 years, Margaret J. Huber Leimkuhler; his only child, John W. Leimkuhler and his wife Roberta; granddaughter Michele A. Butler and great-grandson J.D. Baier. Additionally, he is survived by his stepson Kenneth B. Huber and stepdaughter Nancy Edwards and her husband Floyd as well as six nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Leimkuhler (Nee Stehl).
A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of Oak Crest Village, 8820 Walther Blvd. Parkville, MD on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 1:30p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Gene’s name to his favorite charity, Baltimore Out Reach Services Homeless Shelter c/o Christ Lutheran Church, 701 S.
