KINGSTON,NH: Frederick E. Mello, age 77, a resident of Kingston, NH, formerly of Tewksbury, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at home.
He was the husband of Corinne M. "Kay" (Blanchard) Mello, with whom he celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on December 23, 2010.
Born in Cambridge on April 15, 1933, he was the son of the late Richard A. and Lillian (Smith) Mello.
Fred was raised in Tewksbury and attended Tewksbury schools.
In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Army with the 1745 Company E, 11th Infantry Regiment.
Fred served during the Korean War and was awarded several decorations for his military service including the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Germany).
Prior to his retirement , he was employed as a truck driver by Charles River Laboratories of Wilmington, where he worked for over 35 years. Following retirement, Fred worked for Direct Service Company of Wilmington.
He enjoyed dancing, and traveling with his wife to New York and Florida.
In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by two sons, Richard Leahy of Pittsfield, ME and James Leahy of California; one sister, Dorothy Charlton of Tewksbury; two brothers, Ken Mello of Lowell and Robert Mello and his wife Nancy of Florida; seven grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Fred was the brother of the late Pauline Quinn and Richard E. Mello.
A Memorial Mass will be offered on Friday, March 11, at 10 a.m., at St. Williams Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery. At the request of the family there are No Calling Hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 018701.
