Obituary

Richard W. Shallies, 80, of Rochester died March 5, 2011 at Brandon Woods of New Bedford after a prolonged illness surrounded by family.
He was the husband of Susan B. (Bear) Shallies, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage and the late Barbara (Waterhouse) Shallies.
Born in Northbridge, MA, the son of the late Ernest and Anne (Postma) Shallies, he was raised in Uxbridge and lived in Medway before moving to Rochester in 1988.
He went to school in Uxbridge and graduated from Worcester Trade School. After four years in the U.S. Navy, he learned the electrical trade and at one time owned an electrical contracting business. After joining Local 103 IBEW in Boston, he spent many years on large construction jobs in and around Boston. After his retirement, he enjoyed vegetable gardening and sailing on Buzzard's Bay.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, David B. Shallies and his family of Woodstock, GA and Richard A. Shallies of Orlando, FL; a daughter, Patricia (Shallies) Batty and her family of Fairhaven; 5 step-children, Peter Knight and his family of Springfield, VT, Kathleen (Knight) Langevin and her daughter of Rochester, David Knight and his family of Dover, DE, Alan Knight and his family of Sylvester, GA and Jennifer (Knight) McDaniel and her family of Woonsocket, RI; a sister, Barbara (Shallies) Colby of Mystic, CT. Together there are twenty three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew.
His Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, March 15th at 12 Noon in the Mattapoisett Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 473 South St. W, Raynham, MA 02767 or the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701. Arrangements are with the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6) Mattapoisett.
