Obituary

Worcester: David R. Salmonson, 93, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at UMASS/Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He leaves his wife of 69 years, Alice E. (Makitalo) Salmonson; two sons Richard D. Salmonson of Newbury and Robert W. and his wife Denise Salmonson of Auburn; a granddaughter Brett Campbell; a grandson Richard Salmonson; a great grandson Hayden Salmonson; a niece Judy Hutchinson; and nephews Romaine Goodhue and Roger Salmonson. He was predeceased by a sister Eileen Goodhue and three brothers - Arthur, Arvo, and Salfred Salmonson; a niece Carolyn Parda, and nephews Ronald Salmonson, And William and Richard Goodhue.

David was born in Worcester, son of William and Sophia (Kortesniemi) Salmonson. He graduated from Commerce High School, Becker College, and proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Boy Scout Troop #47. He worked as a firefighter for the Worcester Fire Department for 32 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. David was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Zion Fellowship, The International Association of Firefighters Local 1009, The Worcester County Retired Police and Firefighters Association, the YMCA, The Greendale Retired Men's Club, The Worcester Senior Center, and The Finnish Heritage Society in Rutland.

Calling hours will be held on Monday March 7, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in Nordgren Memorial Chapel 300 Lincoln Street Worcester. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday March 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, 41 Whitmarsh Ave. Worcester. Burial will follow in All Faiths Cemetery.
