Robert "Bob" McElhinney, former Fire Chief for Town of Winchester passed away Thursday, March 3 in Hyannis.
Born in Winchester, the son of the late Patrick and Catherine Desmond McElhinney, Bob was the loving husband of Barbara Neal McElhinney, formerly of Braintree.
A graduate of Winchester High School where he lettered in three sports, Bob joined the Marine Corps shortly after high school and served four years of active duty which included one Tour of Duty in Korea where he served at the Chosin Reservoir and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Bob served thirty one years in the Winchester Fire Department, rising to the rank of Chief. Bob was a member of Winchester VFW Post 3179, The Korean War Veterans Assoc. of Hyannis and the Chosin Few. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Parish of Centerville, MA.
Bob is survived by six children; son Michael and his wife Sylvia of Berwick, ME, son Robert Jr. and his wife Alice of Melrose, MA, daughter Carol Kuhlman of St. Petersburg, FL, daughter Anne Duran and her husband Thomas of Bridgewater, MA, son Paul and his wife Jeanne of Chelmsford, MA, son Sean and his wife Kelly of Clovis, CA. He was also the proud grandfather of Patrick and Michael Duran of Bridgewater and Elizabeth and Dylan McElhinney of Chelmsford.
Bob is also survived by his brother Joseph and his wife Jean, of Woburn, MA. He was predeceased by his late brother Fr. Thomas McElhinney of the Glenmary Home Missioners of Cincinnati, OH.
A funeral will be held on Monday, March 7 from the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington Street, Winchester at 9:00 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, 155 Washington Street, Winchester. Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Sunday from 2-6pm.
