Denis M. Chartier, 56, of Victory Highway, Oakland, RI, died Saturday, February 26, 2011. He was the husband of Denise T. (Plante) Chartier.
Born in Woonsocket, RI, son of Marcel E. and Lucille M. (Beausoleil) Chartier of North Smithfield. He had lived in Burrillville for 28 years previously living in Woonsocket.
Denis was an Assistant Coach for Brown University Woman’s Soccer Team for a total of 15 years and coached a U13 girls team with the New England Wave. Denis spent 2 years as Head Coach for Rhode Island College Women's Soccer. After graduation from Woonsocket High School Denis served 4 years in the US Air Force where he played soccer for the US Air Force All-Star Team in Rhein Mein, Germany. He was inducted into the New England Soccer Hall of Fame on November 1, 2009. Denis volunteered as coach and referee for various clubs and organizations throughout the years.
Besides his wife and parents he leaves, 2 sons, Joseph E. Chartier of Glendale, RI, and Matthew N. Chartier of Rehoboth, MA,
3 brothers, Gary Chartier of Blackstone, MA, David Chartier of Woonsocket, RI, Bruce Chartier of Uxbridge, MA, two sisters, Diane Bernardo of Smithfield, RI, and Gail Brodeur of Forestdale, RI, and 3 grandchildren, Travis, Emma and Max.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 19th at 10:00am in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, 1 Cathedral Square, Providence. Visitation prior to Mass in the church from 8:00am to 9:45am. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to MS Society of RI, 205 Hallene Road, Warwick, RI 02886.
