TEWKSBURY - Ursula A. "Bubbles" (Horgan) Powers, age 85, the matriarch of a large and well known Tewksbury family, died peacefully Saturday evening, February 26, at Wingate at Belvidere, following a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of Karl J. Powers, with whom she celebrated a 65th wedding anniversary this past July 1st.
She was born in Chelsea, June 25, 1925, one of seven children of the late L. Frank and Ursula (Kelley) Horgan, and raised in Chelsea. Her family "summered" at Silver Lake in Wilmington, where she met her future husband Karl. Their marriage was the first recorded at St. Mary's Church in So. Tewksbury, which would become the VFW hall when St. Dorothy's Parish in Wilmington was chartered.
Mrs. Powers, was a devout Catholic, and an active member of St. William's Parish. She served as an Eucharistic Minister, was a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality, was among the founding couples to form the St. William's Couples Club, and volunteered in St. William's counting room for many years.
She was lovingly described to having devoted her life to her church and family.
Besides her husband, she is survived by eight children, Donna M. Powers of Tewksbury, Kathleen J. "Kathy" Mercer and her husband Bruce of Albuquerque, NM, Karl Joseph Powers, Jr. of Lowell, John Robert Powers and his wife Debra (Gadbois) of Reading, Edward F. Powers and his wife Donna (DeVita) of Rowley, Stephen M. Powers of Tewksbury, Patricia A. Clark and her husband Stephen of Bradford, VT, Karla J. Humphreys and her husband William of Lowell; nineteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Fraser of Pepperell; a brother, Paul Horgan of CA; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Hoh) Horgan of Tewksbury and Jean (McHugh) Horgan of TN; and many nieces and nephews. She was also sister of the late Mary E. "Chick" Murphy, Daniel Horgan, Robert V. Horgan, and Marjorie Horgan, sister-in law of William and Elizabeth (Powers) Irwin and John and Edna Powers
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, March 4, in St. William's Church, Tewksbury. Burial followed in Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Oblate Father's Infirmary Fund, 486 Chandler St., Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.
