Elbert C. Rathburn, 75, of Derry, NH died Friday January 9, 2004 in the comfort of his home following a brief illness. Bert, as he was known, was born in Boston, MA on September 17, 1928 the son of the late Elbert and Aida (Christopher) Rathburn. Bert was a resident of Derry for more than 25 years. After graduating from Middlebury College in Vermont, he went on to serve with the US Army during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged after 24 years of service. Bert continued to work for the US Government after his military service until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, a good book or movie, sports and watching his grandchildren play sports. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Erika Rathburn, two sons, Douglas Rathburn and his wife Maribeth, Donald Rathburn and his wife Brenda, three grandchildren, Evan, Conor and Hunter, his sister, Marilyn Morehead and her husband William of Brentwood, NH, also several nieces.
Following cremation, funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to American Diabetes Association, NH Affiliate, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry is handling arrangements.
