ROBBINS: Mr. Jerry Howard McNeill, 72, of Robbins, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011 in his home following a lengthy illness.
Mr. McNeill was a 6th generation Highland Scot who settled in northern Moore County. The first generation settled in the area in the 1790's. He was a retired salesman, and a lifelong though inactive member of Tabernacle Methodist Church. He was an avid Ham radio operator who communicated with stations all over the world for over 35 years. The most enjoyable conversations were with his friend, Dr. Chuck Brady who went on many expeditions world wide and to include outer space.
He graduated from Elise High School in 1957, where he was an outstanding athlete, a first-team starter all four years. He was all conference and an honorable mention all-state in basketball, at quarterback in football, and set records as a baseball pitcher that have not been equaled since. He pitched seven no-hitters, including a perfect game, was all conference and all-state. He was scouted by half of the then 16 teams in major league baseball, and attended the University of North Carolina on a full scholarship where an injury ended his baseball career.
Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Howard T. McNeill, his mother, Evelyn Wentz McNeill, a sister, Audrey Lou McNeill, and most precious and courageous daughter, Amy Lynn McNeill.
He is survived by a daughter, Valerie McNeill Walters and husband Danny; a son, Bradley T. McNeill and wife Donna; and the love of his life, Hilda Mashburn.
There will be a private graveside service at the family gravesite at a later date.
