Dorothy Brown Head, 95, Clarksville, died peacefully at home surrounded by family Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at her residence. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home with Rev. David Forney officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday and from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service Saturday at the funeral home. Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Dorothy was born in Clarksville on August 1, 1915, the daughter of the late Christopher Columbus Brown and Dayse Dorothy Dalton Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Asbury Jefferson (A.J.) Head. She was a graduate of Duke University where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. After college she moved to New York City and studied at the Traphagen School of Design. While there she designed children's clothing and theater costumes including some for the Ziegfeld Follies. She returned to Clarksville due to her father's illness and began a 47 year career as an educator in Montgomery County at Howell School. She later organized and taught a private kindergarten for 11 years. Many of Clarksville's civic leaders began their education at her Jack & Jill Kindergarten. In 1952 she returned to the public school system and taught first and second grade at Moore and Barksdale Schools until her retirement in 1985. While teaching she continued her own education, being awarded a Master of Arts in Education from Austin Peay. Her interest in art remained and she gave private lessons for 15 years. After retirement Dorothy and A.J. enjoyed travel throughout the United States and abroad. She was a founder of the Clarksville Jaycettes and past president of the TN Teachers Association and she was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church. Dorothy is survived by two sons, Bill Head (Stacy) of Niceville, FL, Bob Head (Roberta) of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Carolyn Smithfield (Ron) of Clarksville; five grandchildren, LeAnn Wood of Brentwood, TN, Bill Smithfield (Jennifer) of Springfield, TN, Chris Head (Kathryn) of Memphis, TN, Sara Cole of Nashville, TN, Will Head of Knoxville, TN; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Wood, Caleb Wood, Abby Smithfield, and Anna Kathryn Head. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
