Jane Garthwaite,, 97, of Money Hill Road, died Saturday at the home of her daughter. She was the wife of the late George V. Garthwaite.
Born in Pemberton, England, she had lived in Chepachet previously living in Greenville and Graniteville. She had been a bookbinder with W.E. Jackson Bookbinders and a loving, forever helpful Mom. “Generosity was Aunty Jane’s middle name.”
Always, she tried to live her life by the Golden Rule. To all who knew her she was kind, loving, humble, well read and was an incredible pie maker. Insisting on her independence, she learned to drive at age 60. She was an excellent driver and drove herself and her sister around until they were 94.
She leaves her children, T. Stephen Garthwaite and his wife Judith (Volpe) Garthwaite of Banning, CA, and Ann E. Garthwaite of Chepachet; her twin sister, Hannah Malone of Greenville, sisters, Nora LaTour and Constance Simmons both of Smithfield, 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. She was the mother of the late G. William Garthwaite and sister of the late Edna Waterman.
Her funeral will be held Thursday at 10am in the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Greenville Common, Greenville. Visitation Wednesday 5-7pm. Burial in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to Graniteville Baptist Church, 82 Serrel Sweet Road, Johnston, RI 02919.
