WORCESTER - James D. “Jimmy” Galvin Jr. 63, of Worcester left us peacefully on Thursday February 17, 2011 after a long and courageous battle. Jimmy was born in Chicago IL, raised in Worcester and was proud to be a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, following in his mothers and fathers footsteps. He served in Viet Nam in 1966-67. Jimmy lived with his illnesses for a long time but always maintained a positive spirit and was there to help others in need.
He graduated from Quinsigamond CC and received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology & Counseling from Curry College in 2004. He worked as a cook in Boston & Worcester including Worcester Country Club, and The Beachwood Inn. He was also a residential counselor at SMOC in Hudson and a proud member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Narcotics Anonymous.
He was predeceased by his mother Madelyn M. (Gabree) Galvin Storey in 2006, stepfather Ernest M. Storey in 2000, sister Judith V. (Galvin) Johnson in 1989, and father James D. Galvin Sr. in 1980.
Jimmy leaves his wife Maria deLourdes Galvin, son Michael Canterino and his wife Fabiana, daughter Poliane Canterino of Worcester, brothers Jerome Galvin and wife Elaine of Rutland, John Galvin and wife Beverly of Auburn, Joseph and wife Kathy of Oxford, nieces and nephews John, Stephanie, Michael, Brian and his wife Christina, Courtney and her fiancé Dave, and Patrick Galvin, Scott and Christopher Johnson, cousins, and many friends including his best friend, his dog Nicky.
A celebration of Jimmy’s life is planned for Sunday February 27, 2011 1-5 PM at the Knights of Columbus, 206 S. Quinsigamond Ave. Shrewsbury, MA. All are welcome to attend. Memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Inc. 69 Grove St. Worcester, MA 01605 www.vetransinc.org .
