WORCESTER/LAKE BUTLER, FL-George W. “Curley” Monroe, Jr., 78, of Worcester and Lake Butler, FL, died Sunday, February 13th. His wife of 44 years, Marie P. (Aromando) Monroe, died in 2006. He leaves five children, George W. Monroe, III and his wife Heidi of Shrewsbury, Kelley A. Devlin and her partner, William Fletcher, Jr. of Lake Butler, FL, Marie P. Gann and her husband Monte of Indianapolis, IN, James S. Monroe and Thomas R. Tower, both of Worcester; eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, John E., and Harold J. Monroe and five sisters, Arlene R. Unitis, Lorraine D. Ellis, Charlotte E. Thompson, Margaret A. Mallett and Claire Daignault.
Mr. Monroe was born in Worcester, the son of George W. and Eva (Langely) Monroe. He was a brakeman for over 40 years for the Consolidated Rail Corporation, retiring in 1995. Mr. Monroe enjoyed boxing and was the New England Lightweight Champion in the 50’s. He had fought against some of the top boxing names of his era including Sandy Saddler and Tony DeMarco.
A memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, February 22nd at 7:00 PM in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - St. Ann Church, 24 Mulberry Street. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Boys and Girls Club, Boxing and Fitness Program, 65 Tainter Street, Worcester, MA 01610.
