Mae Payne Simpson, age 88, of 165 Sandy Creek Road, Danville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born January 15, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, VA to the late Jesse and Ethel Hutson Payne. She was a 1940 graduate of Whitmell Farm Life School. On November 7, 1940, she married Percy Lawrence Simpson, who predeceased her in September of 1991, after 50 years of marriage.
Mae worked at Dan River Mills, Darling Shop, and Evelyn’s. She served faithfully as an active member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. She served as Membership Secretary for over 30 years, was an active member of the United Methodist Women, and held many other positions through the years.
Mae was also predeceased by her son, Larry Simpson, brothers, Albert Payne, Jesse Payne, Bud Payne, and Leroy Payne, and sisters, Rosa Barker and Eva Booth.
She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Hawker and husband, Ryland, and Melanie Cockram and husband, Danny, all of Danville, sister, Edith Dishmon of Collinsville, VA, sisters-in-law, Dean Payne of South Boston, VA, Wilsie Payne of Danville, VA, Martha Payne of Conway, SC, Dorothy Simpson of Providence, NC; daughter-in-law, Clara Simpson of Lorton, VA, and daughter-in-law, Ann Jennings, and husband, Jimmy.
Also survived by grandchildren, Perrow Brumfield and wife, Melissa, Kevin Hawke and wife, Jo, all of Danville, Penny Rader and husband, David of Fincastle, VA, Greg Simpson of Cummings, GA, Lauree Schreiber and husband, Danny, of Abingdon, Maryland, Kelsey Bartley and husband, Bruce, and Dustin Cockram, all of Danville; 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, friends and Church family.
The celebration of her life will be held on February 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. by Pastor Jim Stephens at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Mount Cross Road, Danville, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Friday, February 18, 2011 at Barker Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at 122 Mary Circle.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Mount Olivet United Methodist Church General Fund, Building Fund, or Marion Fulton Scholarship Fund.
