Sylvia (Gouveia) Mercer, age 90, of Westport passed away Feb. 16, 2011 at home. She was the wife of the late John Joseph Mercer. Born in Rabo de Peixe, Sao Miguel, Azores, the daughter of the late Jose and Maria (Ferreira) Gouveia. Prior to retiring, Sylvia was a Sewing Machine Operator for Stella Ann Frocks and a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church.
Sylvia was the mother of Eileen Mateus (husband Joseph) of Westport, grandmother of Brian and Jeffrey Mateus (wife Bethany), great grandmother of Caitlin and Hunter Mateus, sister of Emily Michaud of CA, the late Joseph “Jerry” Gouveia, Rose Travers, Mary Fernandes, and aunt to several nieces & nephews.
Her funeral will take place from the MANUEL ROGERS & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 1521 N. Main St. Fall River SATURDAY at 8:45A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Grace Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M. Interment in St. Patrick Cemetery. Calling hours FRIDAY 4-8 P.M.
